UNOS recently announced a new transplant milestone in the U.S. as we’ve climbed above the 30k line in 2015. According to preliminary data from UNOS, of the 30,793 organ transplants in the U.S., UCSF Transplant accounted for almost 3% of those transplants, or 849 transplants across all organ types. With the existence of so many transplant centers in so many states now, our numbers are anything but a drop in the bucket and represent a huge contribution toward these unprecedented, national numbers. Congratulations to all of you for being a part of something so special!

By Christina Pazzanese, Harvard Staff Writer Article from Harvard Gazette, Beware those toxic co-workers; photo by iStock Most people have come across someone known as a “toxic worker,” a colleague or boss whose abrasive style or devious actions can make the workday utterly miserable. Now, Harvard's Dylan Minor has co-authored a new study looking at both the human and fiscal costs of these toxic workers. We hear it all the time on TV, in movies, and social media — the stereotype of everyone being miserable at their job. But it turns out that not everyone is! While putting together our 2015 Employee Engagement Report, we reviewed over 400,000 anonymous survey responses. And naturally, we didn't want to just scratch the surface so we dug even deeper to the state level. Here's the ranking of happiest employees by state: Are you surprised by any of these rankings?

A national research project is under way to create a small, surgically implanted, and free-standing bioartificial kidney to treat end stage renal disease (ESRD). The bioartificial kidney will give ESRD patients new hope beyond the short-term solution of renal dialysis and the longer-term, but impermanent, solution of a living kidney transplant for which donor organs are limited. As well, the bioartificial kidney is expected to save national health care dollars. Here's a brief description of what the AMA is about from its page: "We work in one of the few offices in the country dedicated to helping students (health professional, life sciences, population and social sciences) and postdocs navigate the job market. Our team designs career & professional development programs and resources, and offers 1:1 counseling support to graduate-level biomedical trainees. Feel free to ask us anything about how biomedical scientists can prepare and position themselves for the job market, how institutions can provide career development support to their PhD-level trainees, or strategies to improve the career prospects of the nation’s STEM PhD’s." It has already garnered over 300 comments since its inception! Check out the AMA series here! *Reddit, a very popular site nowadays, is essentially an online bulletin board where users can participate in social networking, enjoy entertainment, and catch up on the latest news/gossips. Article and photo from Alena Hall of the Huffington Post, Workplace Rudeness Isn't Just Toxic, It's Contagious. If you're dealing with rude coworkers on a daily basis, chances are it's rubbing off on you and affecting your other social interactions -- not to mention your overall well-being. According to a recent study from the University of Florida, impolite behavior has the strong power to spread throughout the workplace, even to employees not involved in a given interaction. Plus, it can transcend the boundaries of the office space as workers carry that negative disposition home with them. "When you experience rudeness, it makes rudeness more noticeable," said the study's lead researcher, doctoral student Trevor Foulk, in a statement. "You'll see more rudeness even if it's not there." To test the contagion of rudeness in the office, Foulk and team conducted three experiments. In the first, they monitored 90 graduate students in negotiation scenarios with their classmates. They found that students whose first negotiation partner behaved rudely were more inclined to behave similarly with their subsequent partners in the exercise, perpetuating the cycle. That held true even when a week passed between different negotiation sessions. Read the full story here.

Article from The Huffington Post, This PSA Urging Organ Donation Will Leave You Bawling Feel-Good Tears The slam-dunk formula of animals and mortality wrings tears in a new public service announcement underscoring the importance of organ donation. The PSA, titled "The Man And The Dog," was created by director Rodrigo Garcia Saiz for Argentina's liver transplant foundation, according to the advertising publication Little Black Book Online. In the spot, an elderly man's four-legged friend is loyal to the very end -- and beyond. It's thought to be inspired by Hachiko, the legendarily loyal Japanese dog who waited at the train station for his master every day until he died. Article and video can be found here Blog by Raymond Cogan In case you are one of those rare people for whom George Clooney’s birthday was not at the top of your priority agenda a few days ago (May 5th), you may have forgot to send him a birthday card. Not to worry though as he’s generally understanding of forgetfulness, and you could always pre-date that Hallmark in your hands and blame it on US Postal. You may have also missed his thoughts on organ donation… Do the simple words of George Clooney really carry enough weight to sway the minds of the undecided and push them to register for organ donation? Probably not. But if Tom Cruise can provide a boon for something as dubious as Scientology then having the Clooney on our side certainly can’t hurt matters. Plus, let’s be serious… Could you really resist these thoughtful eyes and disagree with his sentiments? Clooney could probably ask me to give him half of my sandwich right now (I’m starving, and we’re talking turkey/avocado here), and I’d just hold out my hand and offer an “enjoy”. |
